Why Your Body Is the Veil of Separation: Why Spiritual Awakening Has to Move Through Your Nervous System

Updated: May 14

We are not humans having a spiritual experience, we are spiritual beings having a human experience. Neither the spiritual side of ourselves can be ignored, nor the physical. Both parts make up who we are, both parts make us whole.

To truly heal, grow and align with our highest self, understanding both the spiritual and physical parts of ourself is key.

The teaching that bridges both worlds

What is widely understood across many spiritual traditions, and what I align with, is this. We are created from source. Source is an infinite energy. Source, being everything, wanted to know itself through experience.

This teaching shows up everywhere. From the Upanishads and the Hermetic tradition, to modern teachers like Eckhart Tolle and Deepak Chopra. Different vocabularies, same theme.

So source created humans. Each one carrying source energy. Each one set up to live a unique life, gather a unique set of experiences and bring those experiences with them when the human journey has ended.

However, for the experience to be truly unique for each individual, source needed something specific. A mechanism that would let the soul forget where it came from, that it was already source and all-knowing. Without that forgetting, there could be no real unique experience. No learning. No discovery. No experience of polarity, the dark and the light, the yin and the yang.

Most spiritual traditions call that forgetting the veil of separation. The teaching is consistent across them all.

What the veil is actually made of

The veil has three components, each one designed to keep the experience real.

The first is ego. The sense of being a unique individual, separate from everyone else. Ego is what lets you have a name, a personality, a perspective. It is the boundary that says, I am here and you are over there. Judgement is the behaviour

The second is fear. The emotion that exists to keep you alive. Fear sharpens your attention, contracts your body, and keeps you scanning for threat. Without fear, the human would not survive.

The third is love. The pull toward connection. Toward partners and children and friends. Toward creation and community. Without love, the species would not continue and the experience would not deepen across generations.

Ego, fear, love. The three pillars of the veil. Each one doing what it was designed to do.

The mechanism that carries all three is the human body. The body is the veil.

The moment the soul enters the body, the separation begins. We arrive carrying source energy but we forget. We learn the world through the body, build an identity inside the body, and live an entire life inside this mechanism that keeps us from remembering, until the day the body finally lets go and returns to source.

When that day comes, the veil lifts. The soul returns to source carrying everything it learned. Source integrates the experience. Then it decides what it wants to learn and experience next, and the cycle continues. The work of hypnotherapist Dr. Michael Newton in Journey of Souls and psychiatrist Dr. Brian Weiss in Many Lives, Many Masters documents this arc through decades of regression therapy.

Since we are source, we are always connected toward source. The longing you feel, even when your life looks full from the outside, is your soul searching for what it remembers and what it is. We are all one and connected to source. The veil is just makes us feel separated, but in truth we are not.

How the body shapes what you experience

Here is where the science arrives.

Your body and mind are not static. Every second, your nervous system is processing roughly 11 million bits of incoming information. Your conscious mind can only handle about 40 of those bits, (the work of physiologist Manfred Zimmermann).

So the brain filters. The mechanism that does it is the reticular activating system, the structure in the brainstem that decides what gets through to your conscious awareness and what gets ignored.

The brain is built for efficiency. It will not waste energy on information that does not match what it already holds to be true. So the filter is the shape of your beliefs. Whatever story you carry about how the world works, the brain looks for evidence to confirm it, and quietly screens out the rest. Cognitive psychology calls this confirmation bias.

The experience you are having right now, the emotions you feel, the things that seem to keep happening to you, are not happening in some objective field outside of you. They are happening inside the filter you are running.

The beliefs you adopted from early childhood.

Most of those filters were set before you had words.

In the first seven years of life, the brain operates predominantly in theta brainwave state. The state of deepest learning. Everything is absorbed without question. So whatever you experienced in those early years, whatever your caregivers were carrying, whatever the emotional climate of your home was, you absorbed this as truth.

The body is doing this on purpose. It is built to learn fast, because the human child is dependent for years and the faster the wiring forms, the sooner survival becomes reliable.

Emotion encodes belief deeper. The more emotion present at the moment of imprinting, the more strongly the belief locks into the subconscious. Demonstrated through the work of neuroscientists Joseph LeDoux and Lisa Feldman Barrett. Survival is the priority of all humans, so the experiences that felt most threatening are the ones that imprint most strongly. If you grew up in an environment that often felt unsafe, your wiring is now full of beliefs that the world is unsafe, that love is conditional, that you must perform to be loved, that depending on others is dangerous.

Those beliefs are not the truth. They are what was true for you, in your house when you were small. If you widen your lens, the worldly experience can be safe, loving and abundant. Many already have these experiences. Those environments and experiences exist. It is possible. But your nervous system does not know the difference. It just knows it kept you alive last time it ran this program, so it runs it again and again.

The good news, and the law of polarity

These beliefs run roughly ninety percent of your adult behaviour and your perception of reality. Cell biologist Bruce Lipton places this figure as high as ninety-five percent through his work in The Biology of Belief. Dr. Joe Dispenza has documented similar findings. They make you avoid what reminds you of pain. They make you reach for what previously kept you safe, even when that thing no longer serves you.

This is why insight alone never seems to change much. You can name a pattern in a therapy session and find yourself running back to it the next time the threat is present. Knowing is not changing.

Here is the good news. The wiring can be rewritten. The brain is plastic. Neuroplasticity is well understood since the work of Donald Hebb in 1949. Neurons that fire together wire together. The same nervous system that learned fear early can learn safety now. But it does not reprogram through awareness. It reprograms through repetition. Each time you catch the old program and choose differently, you weaken the old pathway and strengthen a new one. Each time you bring love and safety to the part of you that has been afraid, you teach the body that love and safety can land, and you start to release trying to control your environment. you become more in flow.

We all learn through polarity. The hard seasons and the light ones. Without the negative side of any experience, there is no learning. The contrast is what makes the lesson land. The soul did not come here for an easy life. It came here for a complete one. Within a single lifetime, both are present. This is the law of polarity. The Hermetic teachings, through The Kybalion, name it as one of the seven universal principles. It is not personal. It is the structure of how a soul learns inside a body. Once you understand that, the difficult seasons stop feeling like punishment. They start feeling like part of the design.

The body also has a way back

The body is not only the veil. It also has a built-in way back. We need this, so that we can have connection to source and our higher self to access guidance and support along the journey. The soul is never separated from source. Only forgotten by the conscious mind. The body, even as it forms the veil, also carries a mechanism that lets us reach back through it. The pineal gland.

The pineal gland sits deep in the centre of the brain. In every spiritual tradition, it is the gateway. The seat of the soul. The third eye. Dr. Rick Strassman has explored its role in non-ordinary states through DMT: The Spirit Molecule.

People who have learned to access this gateway, through meditation, breathwork, and other practices designed to quiet the conscious mind, describe the same thing. A connection and knowing that we are all one and connected to source, but that is very difficult to put into words. A sense of being held by something vastly bigger than ourselves, in unconditional love.

This is the body's own design for staying connected to source even while it carries the veil. To fully access this space, we need to overcome the veil, the ego, the fear and release control. Most of us are never taught this. We are taught the spiritual is somewhere else, far away, available only to a chosen few.

The gateway is available. The body has a doorway in its design. Learn to use what you were given.

What I have lived

I have moved through these cycles many times. I carry a lot of 11-2's in my soul contract, and this is the lesson of "death to life", "letting go", "rebirth". over and over.

I have experienced this cycle more times than I can count. Once i started noticing the pattern, and realising the purpose, my mind started to shift. Instead of sitting in this dark space for long periods, i was able to pull myself out just by how I processed my own experiences differently. This shifted my emotional experiences, which shifted my behaviour and ultimately my experience of this human experience and reality.

The same situations stopped landing the same way. I started to attract people who could meet me. Work that felt true to who I was becoming started to flow. Joy and peace returned once I let go of my ego, fear and control.

The difference was never the outside world. The outside world reflected what was happening to me on the inside. What I now attract, the joy I feel, the success that lands or evades me, the way relationships unfold. All of it is shaped by my nervous system, my beliefs, the wiring underneath. The body is the veil, and the veil decides what gets through, and how life is experienced.

So when the old programs get triggered now, I recognise it. I do not judge it. My body is doing what it was designed to do, to keep me safe. However, I consciously chose to process those triggers differently than what my mind automatically wants me to do. Over time, those triggers become less, and it becomes easier and easier to overcome the original programming.

This has had such an impact on my life, that I chose to make this work my mission. I want to help other people get to the other side faster than I did.

Coming home

The path is the path of remembering.

A body without a soul has no purpose. A soul without a body has no experience. The two cannot be separated.

When you understand both sides, clarity arrives. Peace arrives. You begin to see that you can influence your own experience and shape it into whatever you want it to become.

You are not trapped in your body. You are not separate from source. You never were. You are source, having a human experience inside a body that is doing what it was built to do.

The work is not to transcend the body. The work is to master it.

If you want the deeper version of this teaching, the framework lives inside my book, Your InnerSoulstice: The 5 Gates. The 12 meditation tracks I created rewire specific subconscious beliefs one at a time. A Soul Contract Reading help to bring clarity to the leassons and journey your soul chose to master in this lifetime.

Love always,

Ilona
